Research Projects
2023 – (2025): Primary investigator researching the performance characteristics of alternative binders in bituminous road pavement materials. The research aims to evaluate asphalt containing sustainable bitumen modifiers, extenders or direct replacement in terms of short-term rutting, long-term fatigue, as well as durability aspects such as water susceptibility and permeability. The rheology of the bituminous mixtures are also analysed. Alternatives currently under consideration include lignin and recycled rubber tyres. Collaborator with the NRF.
2023 – (2024): Primary supervisor in investigating the performance of open-graded rubber-modified asphalt briquettes when subjected to accelerated pavement testing via the Model Mobile Load Simulator (MMLS). Collaborator with industry partner, AECI Much Asphalt.
2022 – 2023: Co-supervisor in measuring effectiveness of surface rejuvenator spray or slurry type applications to kerb gravel loss and stripping of mature ultra-thin friction layers. The project includes evaluating treated and pre-treated cores with various permeability tests, computerised tomography of the cores, and evaluating the recovered binder properties with rheological and FTIR analysis. Collaborators with industry partners, TOSAS and SRT.
2018 – 2021: PhD candidate developing models for the ageing and rheology of surfacing seal binders in South Africa. The work built on the project below. The development of rheology indicators and optimised numerical equation model parameters were applied to analyse the primary influencers on ageing paths and develop a machine learning voting regression model to correlate binder rheology to surfacing age. Collaborator with the Wilhelm Frank Foundation.
2016 – 2018: MEng candidate investigating the rheological performance of recovered bituminous surfacing treatment binders. The project included recovering binders from road surfacing specimens retrieved throughout South Africa and evaluating their rheology indicators. Collaborator with SANRAL.

Research Supervision
I am fortunate to have had significant opportunities to co-supervision both MEng research (R) and structured (S) students. Recently, I have started leading students as the co- and primary supervisor.

Research Funding
The highlights of my research career as been receiving NRF Thuthuka early-career researcher funding, a Wilhelm Frank PhD scholarship, as well as a Zuid-Afrika Scholarship to spend a semester exchange at TU Delft, NL.
